Tagging and Tracking of Marine Animals with Electronic Devices Free Download

The 2nd international tagging and tracking symposium was held in San Sebastian, Spain, in October 2007, seven years after the first symposium was held in Hawaii in 2000 (Sibert and Nielsen 2001). In the intervening seven years, there have been major advances in both the capability and reliability of electronic tags and analytical approaches for echolocation of tagged animals in marine habitats. Advances such as increased data storage capacity, sensor development, and tag miniaturization have allowed researchers to track a much wider array of marine animals, not just large and charismatic species. Importantly, data returned by these tags are now being used in population analyses and movement simulations that can be directly utilized in stock assessments and other management applications. Papers in this volume are divided into three sections, the first describing insights in behavior achieved using acoustic, archival, and novel tags, the second reporting on advances in methods of geolocation, while the final section includes contributions where tag data have been used in management of marine species. Accurate documentation of animal movements and behaviors in critical marine habitats are impossible to obtain with other technologies. The management and conservation of marine species are critical in today"s changing ocean environment and as electronic tags become more accurate and functional for a diversity of organisms their application continues to grow, setting new standards in science and technology.

Free Durability Design of Concrete Structures in the Severe Environments

Concrete structures in severe environments include a variety of different types of structure in various types of environment. In addition to all the important concrete infrastructures which are severely exposed to aggressive environments from de-icing salts, most of the extensive experience on concrete structures in severe environments is related to the marine environment. Of the total surface area of the globe, about 70 per cent is covered by ocean water, which means that the area of the oceans makes up about two and a half times the area of the land. When considering the even smaller part of the land area which is inhabitable and increasingly more populated, this indicates an increasing need in the years to come of moving even more activities into the ocean waters and marine environments. This increasing need may be briefly characterized by a few keywords such as raw materials, energy, transportation and space.

How Products Are Made: An Illustrated Guide to Product Manufacturing Free Download

The text layout and the illustrations are up to Gale's usual high standards, and organization is designed for ease of use. Each article is divided into several sections, such as background, history, raw materials, design, the manufacturing process, quality control, byproducts, the future, and where to learn more. The section on the manufacturing process is broken down into numbered steps. Each article is accompanied by one or more clear line drawings or diagrams. For some 10 percent of the articles, William S. Pretzer, a manufacturing historian and curator at the Henry Ford Museum, has contributed boxed entries on the developmental history of the product. Books and periodicals cited in the where-to-learn-more sections are up-to-date (including at least one 1994 entry) and often represent both popular and industry sources. A 15-page index includes personal names and subjects from within entries. In addition to being a guide to the manufacture of more than 100 products, this first volume in a new series devotes roughly equal space to a variety of nonmanufacturing information. A new volume will be published every two years. The eclectic roster of products examined ranges from air bags, aluminum foil, artificial limbs, and aspirin to zippers and zirconium. Included are retail goods as well as intermediate goods used in the manufacture of other products.

Multiscale Modeling in Continuum Mechanics and Structured Deformations

The Multiscale Modeling in Continuum Mechanics and Structured Deformations (CISM International Centre for Mechanical Sciences)The purpose of the book is to present some recent progress in two active and related areas of continuum mechanics: fracture mechanics and structured deformations. The book may be divided into two parts. The first part deals with the theory of structured deformations, a basic concept that can be used to describe smooth and nonsmooth geometrical changes at different length scales, including, for example, both slip and microslip and, of particular interest in the second part of this course, both macroscopic fracture and microfracture. The work presents an updated account of the state-of-the-art in the subject.

Design Rules for Actuators in Active Mechanical Systems

Design Rules for Actuators in Active Mechanical Systems will be of use to industry professionals, such as actuator and machine designers, as well as to researchers and students of mechanical engineering, mechatronics, and electrical engineering. In active mechanical systems (mechanisms or structures) the possibility of a coupling between active and passive elements at an early stage of the design process is becoming more and more significant. In order to integrate actuators in preliminary design procedures, or in a multidisciplinary optimization approach, reliable models of the actuator performance (actuator force and stroke, loading curves, strength limitm, volume and mass specific work and power, frequency range, efficiency) as a function of the design parameters and variables (actuator principle, size of the actuator element) are necessary. Design Rules for Actuators in Active Mechanical Systems deals with the formulation of model-based design rules to be used in the conception of optimized mechatronic and adaptation systems.
